Dylan Johnson is an international freelance photographer, filmmaker, and award-winning graphic designer from Norman, Oklahoma. Johnson put himself through school as a web and graphic designer in California. He returned to Oklahoma to found DOJO, a music venue and incubator for local artists and photographers. He is moving from Norman, OK to Brooklyn, NY on July 15th, after his opening at STASH.

9 questions: Dylan Johnson

1. WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF ART?
That’s a hefty 1st question. I think a vast amount of high priced artwork gets by on implied value. I prefer to find inspiration in people that have it, but don’t realize it yet.

2. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARTWORK?
Thrown together.

3. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Traveling. Whiskey. Townes Van Zandt. Getting weird with people. Chupacabre. People that don’t do what is expected of them. Consumerism as applied to humans in relation to our hunter/gatherer primal nature. Anxiety.

4. WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE ARTISTS?
It’s embarrassing that I needed this push, but I had an uncle, Ty Johnson, who went missing for 10 years. He was discovered to be alive, even though none of us would ever see him alive again.

To me, he was an inspiration. He was psychedelic, dark and abstract, included a lot of non-sensical elements. I’ve always felt his style has influenced my photography and probably shaped who I am a little.

5. WHEN ARE YOU MOST CREATIVE?
When you’ve lost someone close to you, you figure out what matters really fast. I believe in duality in every situation. There is a certain realization of importance when you lose someone. It gives everything meaning.

6. HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN A PIECE YOU ARE WORKING ON IS COMPLETE?
I think the beauty of things is that they are never complete. They are just where you leave them when you die.

7. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE ARTIST IN SOCIETY?
To fuck shit up, I suppose.

8. ARE YOU AN ALCOHOLIC?
Among other things.

9. THREE THINGS YOU WOULD TAKE ON A DESERT ISLAND?
Music, my camera and my mom.
